This course develops an understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies of the regimes along with the nature and types of liberty through directed readings in Thucydides’ Peloponnesian War, Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, Luther’s The Freedom of a Christian, Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, and Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.
